Schon auf dem Weg dorthin bekehrten sich Könige, und ganze Völker hörten die Botschaft von der Versöhnung mit Gott. Thomas wurde von den Zeichen eines Apostels begleitet, Menschen wurden geheilt und von bösen Geistern befreit. Nach langjährigem Wirken mit vielen faszinierenden Erlebnissen starb Thomas in Madras (Chennai) als Märtyrer. Noch heute führen sieben christliche Kirchen Indiens ihre Wurzeln auf Thomas zurück und gehören deshalb zu den „Thomaschristen“.
