Da aber der Bau solcher Kraftwerke einen markanten Eingriff in die Natur darstellt, sind Experten der Meinung, dass der Neubau nicht weiter verfolgt wird, sondern die bestehenden Anlagen modernisiert werden sollten.
    Ein anderer Ansatz um Energie zu speichern sind Druckluftspeicher-Kraftwerke (Compressed Air strength garage – CAES). Basierend auf einem Gasturbinenprozess, können z.B. leergeförderte Erdgasfelder oder stillgelegte Salzbergwerke wieder von Nutzen sein, um Energie in shape von Druckluft zu speichern.
    Ziel der Arbeit conflict es, anhand eines Berechnungsmodells und entsprechender software program die theoretischen Randbedingungen und Prozessabläufe für österreichische Bedürfnisse zu erarbeiten, und mit den beiden bestehenden CAES-Anlagen (Huntdorf und McIntosh) zu vergleichen.
    Als erster Schritt wurde eine Literaturrecherche durchgeführt um einen Überblick über die Komplexität solcher Anlagen zu erhalten. Da nur sehr wenige Prozessdaten der beiden bestehenden Anlagen veröffentlicht wurden, musste ein Berechnungsmodell erarbeitet werden, welches sämtliche Zustandsänderungen erfasst.
    Als weiterer Schritt wurde eine examine der veröffentlichten Daten der Austrian strength Grid (APG) durchgeführt, um die Lastbereiche abstecken zu können. Aus diesen Daten konnten zwei Lastspitzen definiert werden. Diese beiden Lastspitzen wurden in weiterer Folge als Berechnungsgrundlage herangezogen um die Speichergröße sowie den Entlade- und Beladevorgang zu errechnen.
    Der Entladevorgang wurde einerseits mit variablem Druckniveau und zum anderen, nach dem Stand der Technik, mit konstantem Druckniveau durchgerechnet.
    Der Beladevorgang wurde durch einen 3–stufigen Verdichter realisiert, da eine Verdichtung von Umgebungsdruck auf Speicherdruck mit nur einer Stufe energetisch nicht sinnvoll ist.
    Abschließend wurde eine examine des Wirkungsgrades durchgeführt. Im Zuge dieser Arbeit konnte gezeigt werden, dass eine CAES-Anlage energetisch durchaus sinnvoll ist.
